M.A. IN HISPANIC STUDIES MAIN PAGE
Graduate study in Spanish has a long and distinguished tradition at LSU and has
been enhanced by a redesigned M.A. in Hispanic Studies.
Mission Statement:
To advance knowledge in Hispanic Studies through research in language, literatures
and cultures as we train future professors and scholars.
Our M. A. in Hispanic Studies program at LSU is an interdisciplinary program
designed to prepare students with a comprehensive and yet particularly focused academic
knowledge of language, literature and culture. This will prepare the student with
a well-rounded education and the skills to succeed academically, and enjoy a wide
range of professional opportunities.
Students may choose a concentration in literary, linguistics, or cultural studies.
Each option requires a total of thirty-six credit hours and allows students the
opportunity to take courses related to Hispanic issues in anthropology, geography,
history, and political science. The program is supported by a faculty that is particularly
strong in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of language, literature, and
culture.
Full-time students typically complete our 36-credit hour M.A. program in two years.
Students may choose to write a thesis or take a comprehensive exam as their graduation
requirement.
Students who choose the thesis option must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours
in course work plus six thesis hours. At least 18 of their course work credit hours
must be at the (advanced)
7000-level.
Students who choose the comprehensive exam option must complete a minimum of 36
credit hours in course work. At least 21 credit hours of course work must be at
the (advanced)
7000-level.
More detailed information is provided in the M.A. program Handbook.
